In just over a decade, solar energy has evolved from being limited to highly specialized applications that justified the high cost, or heavily subsidised programs entirely dependent on the continuing policy support from governments; to increasingly capturing a large share of the total power generation market on the strength of economics alone.
Today, policy makers, investors, and the public, increasingly recognise that we are in the midst of an energy transition and that solar energy has reached a tipping point. While there is no doubt solar is a sustainable response to the environmental and opportunity cost of hydrocarbon-fueled power generation, its competitive economics are now increasingly coming to the forefront.
The global photovoltaic industry consists of many different competitors with a variety of technologies and widely differing strategies and market focuses.
In order to help executives, engineers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and consultants explore and fully understand this technology, the business models, the key trends, the industry forces, the regulatory issues, and the wider social, political and ecological contexts, SunMobi have joined forces with Holonomics Education to present the most comprehensive, pioneering and innovative course on solar energy in Brazil – Energy Canvas. The course is offered with the support from Infinity Conferences and Híria.
Energy Canvas is a course which will be taught at CIETEC in São Paulo. It is structured across twenty classes taking place over a ten-week period, starting in March 2017. This week we are launching our new website – www.energycanvas.com.br and we are also launching the brochure for the course. You can download a copy in Portuguese here.
One of the key features of the course is that for the first time in Brazil we will be introducing the Flourishing Canvas. I am a member of the Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group which is based at the Strategic Innovation Lab at OACD University, Toronto. This group has been developing the canvas, which is an evolution of the business model canvas, for over three years. It provides a more systemic view of what is required to develop truly sustainable businesses, taking into account three perspectives of environment, society and the economy and four contexts of process, value, people and outcomes.
At present the canvas is only being licensed to First Explorers such as myself, and so this will will be the first chance for people in Brazil not only to explore the canvas, but to look at why and how it was developed, the evolutionary path from Alex Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas, and how it connects with Fritjof Capra’s grand synthesis The Systems View of Life (whom I am also working with). We will be working extensively with the canvas during the course, helping participants to develop new business opportunities using its systemic structure for truly sustainable businesses.
The course has four different modules, which I will now explain in detail:
Module A: Setting the Context – Energy and Society
The first four classes look at energy and society, starting with the opening Aula Magna with two specially invited guest speakers. We will introduce and position the course, following with the second class which looks at the historical development of electrical technologies. This will allow us to understand why the energy sector is as it is today, including local and national government, regulatory and technical bodies who all impact on the provisioning of energy services in Brazil. This model will close with a look at current business models in the energy sector, using business cases and business modelling to understand how value is currently generated both for providers and for consumers.
Module B: Evolutionary and Disruptive Scenarios
This module also consists of four classes which will explore the new business models in detail which are disrupting the current energy sectors and which are leading to exciting new opportunities for clean and renewable energy. Participants will be fully involved in the creation of new business models, exploring simulations and their own ideas for value generation. We will also be introducing Holonomics and sharing our insights from working with purpose and values in marketing, and how brands are evolving to fully embrace higher purposes beyond a singular focus on pure financial results.
Module C: Solar Power Technologies and Photovoltaic Systems
Energy Canvas is not an introductory course. It is designed for professionals within the energy sector who are looking to acquire the most up-to-date knowledge and skills about this sector, including software modelling. This module will provide three classes with detailed technical information and knowledge about the functioning of solar technologies. This includes the manufacture of solar panels, the structure and operation of solar panel factories, and the criteria for selecting solar solutions based on the location in which they will be installed. The full solar energy value chain will be explained, with participants using PVSyst, a software package for photovoltaic systems. The more technical aspects will be complemented with a number of TED-style talks to help provoke analysis and understanding of the wider contextual issues being discussed.
Module 4: Photovoltaic Business Systems
Module four is the largest one with nine classes. It starts with a class on business plans, how they are constructed and which elements are needed to develop a renewable energy business. Following this are two classes which describe and explain the functioning of mini and micro solar plants, including their economic and financial models. With participants now having an appreciation of the technical, financial, regulatory and marketing dimensions of renewable energy, we then introduce the flourishing business canvas across five classes.
The reason for dedicating this much time is to allow people to explore the canvas by building not just a business model, but also how to plan, develop and launch a business based on the canvas, including full business case and business plan preparation. Participants will also hear from a leading industry expert on how to pitch, and through role play and live exercises they will have the ability to pitch their business ideas to our expert panel.
The reason we are able to offer such a comprehensive course on solar energy is due to the depth and breadth of industry experience and thought leadership from the team who will be teaching Energy Canvas, in addition to the specially invited guest speakers who are leading industry experts.
SunMobi are an exciting new start-up who developing new business models which are revolutionising the way in which clean-energy services are being offered to consumers and organisations through the use of sharing platforms and distribution networks.
The founders of Sun-Sim are Alexandre Bueno, a business strategy and planning consultant with over 15 years of experience in the energy sector, and Guilherme Susteras, an electrical engineer with over 15 years of international business experience in regulation and planning with companies such Duke Energy, National Grid e Renova Energia.
The co-founders of Holonomics Education are myself, the co-author of the book Holonomics: Business Where People and Planet Matter, and the creator of the framework Customer Experiences with Soul, a new approach to design inspired by our Holonomics approach and over 25 years of experience in user -centred design, innovation and business development, and Maria Moraes Robinson, also the co-author of Holonomics, and who is one of the most respected business strategists in Brazil. Maria is an economist who worked directed with Robert Kaplan and David Norton on the development of the Balanced Scorecard methodology. Maria brings to Energy Canvas many years of experience in the development and execution of the business strategies of many of the largest and most important corporations in Brazil, in addition to her powerful approach to change management which has been developed from the perspective of Holonomics. We will also be bringing many insights from our new book Customer Experiences with Soul: A New Era in Design which launches this April.
Although the course is focused on solar energy, it is also of direct relevance to people wishing to develop further their skills and knowledge in planning, business case development, business modelling and customer experience design for start-ups and sustainability-related projects. While the business ideas being created with the Flourishing Canvas will be based on renewable energy, the knowledge gained will be equally transferable to other industries, sectors, products and services. These of course will also be complemented with our Holonomics approach which will cover business strategy, customer experience design, mental models, leadership skills for the new economy, systems models, purpose, employee and stakeholder engagement, change methodologies, dialogue skills and human values, the foundation of our work. For this reason people are able to sign up to any one of the four modules individually as opposed to taking the full course.
